Sergio Manetti and 'Le Pergole Torte'

In 1967, Sergio Manetti bought the Montevetrino estate in Radda in Chianti, a reinforced farmhouse with land, as a holiday residence. Manetti wanted to make his own Chianti. With no knowledge of wine making, 2 hectares of vineyard were planted and the adventure could begin.

However, Manetti soon ran into the Chianti rules of that time. Among other things, they determined a minimum percentage of white grapes in the Chianti, something he was stronly opposed to. Thus, in 1971, 'Le Pergole Torte' was born, a Vino da Tavola (table wine) made from 100% Sangiovese.

Manetti was one of the first to take the risk to do so and was successful from the start. 'Le Pergole Torte' achieved its current world fame with the 1990 Riserva and since then it has been a cult wine.

The influence of Sergio Manetti, who passed away in 2000, is great up until this day. In his footsteps other legendary 100% Sangiovese Super Tuscans have emerged: Flaccianello, Percarlo, Cepparello and many others.
