René Engel

Top shelf Pinot Noir

The Engel family estate was located in Vosne-Romanée and had old vines in only 3 grand crus: 'Clos de Vougeot', 'Echezeaux' and 'Grands-Echezeaux'. Domaine René Engel is considered the reference for the 'Clos de Vougeot', and has few equals in terms of texture and aromatic richness.

[…] a solid if not sensational effort in the context of the quality this wine typically displays....Philippe and Frédéric Engel have crafted some very fine Burgundies in 1999. They tell me that the grapes were harvested at ideal levels of ripeness, both in terms of potential alcohol levels as well as a superb degree of physiological ripeness. – 90/100, Burghound

The vineyards were taken over in 2006 by François Pinault - owner of Château Latour - after father and son Engel died shortly after each other and renamed Domaine d'Eugenie. The Engel domain unfortunately no longer exists, but this means that these wines are particularly sought after by afficionados all over the world.

We offer 3 lots Clos-Vougeot 1999 and 1 lot Echezeaux 1999 in the upcoming August auction: lots 1144, 1145, 1146 and 1147.
