Cappellano: an iconic estate
Winery Cappellano is a historic estate in Langhe, Piedmont, Italy. Originating in 1870, this family-run winery is known for its commitment to quality and authenticity. Like Mascarello, Rinaldi and several other iconic domains, the Cappellano family has played an important role in the development of regional wine culture.
A single-minded vision has allowed Cappellano to make a mark on the importance of making high quality wines in this area. Partly because of this, they have established themselves as one of the most respected producers of Barolo.
Remarkably, Cappellano refuses to have their wines scored by the mainstream wine press. Only Antonio Galloni of Vinous is allowed to publish tasting notes, but without scores. His descriptions often show that both the wine and the winemaker steer away from common perceptions about a vintage. So don't be swayed by vintage charts or general opinion about lesser vintages-Cappellano excels precisely in circumstances where others have fallen short.
Early on, the focus was on preserving old vines and working according to organic and biodynamic principles. Impervious to trends and modern influences, the Cappellano's have always stayed true to their philosophy: making pure, honest wines that take time and show what or how a true Barolo should be.
Legendary are ‘Pie Rupestris’ and ‘Pie Franco’, wines from chalky soils in which both the power and finesse of the Nebbiolo grape emerge brilliantly. Antonio Galloni describes them as ‘complex, hedonistic and exotic’.
Fans will find these special wines in lots 4090 to 4093 of the Valentines auction.
