Maybach Family Vineyards Materium

The Maybach family has been synonymous with luxury car craftsmanship and inventions for a century. Wilhelm Maybach represents a story from an exciting boys' book thanks to his interwoven life story with Gottlieb Daimler. Together they design, among other things, spectacular engines and Wilhelm designs the first Mercedes. Now, more than a hundred years later, the name Maybach, through the emigration of son Karl to the USA, is also a synonym for craftsmanship in wine-growing.

In 2004 the family hired the well-known winemaker Thomas Brown to create a 'single vineyard' for their Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is one of world class.

If the name Thomas Brown sounds familiar to you, then that may be right. Brown is a big name in Napa. He made and makes wines for various domains in California, including the domain Schrader. Brown's motto is that the wine should reflect the vineyard and not the winemaker. He does this with recognized success: in 2010 he was named "Winemaker of the Year" by Food & Wine magazine.

The grapes for Maybach Materium come from the "Weitz Vineyard", in Oakville, the heart of the Napa Valley appellation. Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate are also based here. Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptionally high quality is grown here. The first year was immediately rewarded with 95 points by Robert Parker. However, this is only the beginning for this very exclusive cuvée, as both 2013 and 2014 have received a perfect score of 100/100 from Parker.

The flagship, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium, represents 560 cases and achieved 14.8% alcohol after aging in 90% new Taransaud and Darnajou casks. Remarkably, the wine matches the perfect 2013, with extraordinary fragrance of blueberry, blackberry, forest floor, truffle, spring flowers and background barbecue smoke followed by a thick, unctuously textured, juicy, but incredibly well-balanced, intense wine. This is built like a skyscraper with enormous quantities of blueberry, blackberry and cassis fruit, well-integrated acidity and sweet, gentle tannins. This is an extraordinary effort from Maybach that can be drunk now or cellared for up to 30 or more years. – 100RP
