Worth Discovering: Greece !
At Sylvie's we have a real passion for the rare and undiscovered. This auction is no exception, with wine from two special Greek winemakers not to be missed!
First we present lot 4451: 2004 Oikonomoy 'Antigone' from Domaine Economou from Crete, only produced in this vintage and in 1999. This red wine comes from high-altitude vineyards on which Phylloxera has not taken hold. The wine is often praised for its complex nose and taste. The wine from local grape varieties finds its way to wine lists of top restaurants on various continents through word of mouth. The winemaker's craftsmanship is reflected in the wine. Trained as an oenologist in Alba, Italy, under the tutelage of Ceretto and Scavino, Giannis Economou honed his skills at Château Margaux and Franz Keller. The wine has an expected lifespan beyond 2030.
Next we have lot 4452: the white 2019 Assyrtiko 'Cuvee Monsignori' from Estate Argyros (in magnum no less!). The Assyrtiko grapes come from the oldest vineyard on the island with vines that are at least 200 years old, an age made possible because the Phylloxera did not take hold on the island of Santorini. The result is a full expression of the island's generous lands. The low yields both per hectare - and in total - make these bottles extremely rare, especially in magnums. The 2019 vintage is a great one, and the combination of size, vintage and limited production elevates this bottle to an almost unattainable beauty that can be admired until 2029.
