Philipponnat 'Clos des Goisses' - a Champagne legend under the radar

Philipponnat 'Clos des Goisses'

Rarely seen at our auction is 'Clos des Goisses' by Philipponnat. This top Champagne is characterized by a great aging potential, which requires years of patience until 'Clos des Goisses' shows itself in all its facets.

'Clos des Goisses' comes from a steep south-facing vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay. With its chalky soil, this vineyard has one of the warmest terroirs in the Champagne region.

First produced in 1935, 'Clos des Goisses' was in the early years a blend of mainly Chardonnay supplemented by Pinot Noir. 'Clos des Goisses' was one of the first Champagnes to be produced from the grapes of a single vineyard, which was unusual in those years. Today 'Clos des Goisses' contains about 2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Chardonnay and is predominantly fermented in temperature controlled steel tanks and partly in barriques.

At auction
The 'Clos des Goisses' from the sublime vintage 2008 offered at this auction deviates from the current rules and consists of 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir and is mostly fermented in barriques.

You will find the 2008 'Clos des Goisses' and the Philipponnat Rosé 'Clos des Goisses' in lots 729 and 730.
