Château Mouton Rothschild 2018

The 2018 vintage is a story of 2 extremes. Winter and spring are wetter than usual. From July on the weather gods move and 3 months of dry and sunny weather follow. The average temperature between 14th July and 15th August at 23.6°C – compared to the long term average of 21°C – is in the top 3 hottest summers, after 1947 and 2003.

This vintage the best wines are from the Northern Médoc and more specific from Saint-Estephe, Saint-Julien and Pauillac, where cabernet sauvignon grows on a dep layer of pebbles, under which is water retaining layer of clay-limestone. The wet start of the growing season secures sufficient water for the grapevines to last the dry and warm summer.

One of the 2018 top wines undoubtedly is Château Mouton Rothschild, a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol percentage at 13.8% is modest considering such a hot summer. In any case it has turned out to be a very complex Mouton with perfectly ripe tannins and beautiful floral and fruity nuances.

This vintage has been scored 99/100 by Robert Parker, again a profound wine that should rest in the cellar for several more years, but will be offering drinking pleasure would you not be able to keep your hands off it.

“Deep garnet-purple colored, it straight away pops with bright, vivacious notes of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly with slowly emerging nuances of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice and black tea, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory with lingering mineral suggestions. This is so, so delicious and, due to the ripeness of tannins, approachable now. It will be difficult to keep your mitts off it for a good 5-7 years, when all those tightly tucked away nuances should begin to emerge. After that, it should improve over the course of 25 years or more and drink for 40+.” – 99/100, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
