Piper-Heidsieck Rare Brut 1979

Piper-Heidsieck makes Rare Brut only in years with perfect weather conditions. The first extraordinary vintage was made in 1976 after an incredibly intense heat wave. Since then, only ten more vintages have been added: 1979, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Usually this cuvée consists of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims. Only the best cru's are eligible such as Oger, Avize, Trépail, Chouilly and Villers-Marmery for Chardonnay & Verzy, Ambonnay, Ludes and Rilly la Montagne for Pinot Noir.

The Chardonnay gives this Rare Brut a remarkable purity, the Pinot Noir provides structure. The wine is never sees any wood and the long ageing 'sur lie' gives the wine a delicious richness of aromas and flavours.

"This wine contains all the romance and pleasure one would expect from a vintage like 1979, but the acidity here is incredibly youthful. A wine for bon vivants." 95+ points, The Champagnist
